About me

I was born in Lima, Peru and grew up in Lima, Boston, and South Florida.  Spending my childhood in both Peru and the US allowed me to be exposed to both Spanish and English before the "critical period for language acquisition" and fortunately, because of that, I am a "perfect" bilingual.

I attended Duke University and graduated in 1998 with a Bachelors degree in Art History and Spanish Literature.  During my senior year at Duke, I applied to the Teach for America program.  I got accepted and was placed teaching high school Spanish at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, DC.

Teaching Spanish got me interested in second language acquisition, and that is how I decided to go to graduate school for Linguistics.  In December, 2003 I graduated with a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Florida in Gainesville.  At UF I got a lot more teaching experience in English as a Second Language as well as Introduction to Linguistics
.

About my family

My dad, Ignacio, is a psychiatrist practicing in Fort Lauderdale.  In addition to being an MD, he is also an accomplished writer.  In 2002 he won a prestigious writing award given by Caretas Magazine, the top Peruvian news magazine.  He wrote a short story called La Faena. You can read all about his award here.

My mom, Lula, works with my dad managing the office. When she's not at the office she spends time knitting really beautiful sweaters and shirts.  She is very talented and creative, gets complimented every time she wears her creations.  I am trying to convince her to start her own business!

Roxana is my younger sister and best friend.  She is a seventh grade Language Arts teacher at Nova Middle School in Broward County.  She got married in March 2007!

My dogs have always been part of my family.  Cookie is a Cocker Spaniel who still acts like a puppy despite the fact she is 9 years old.  We recently lost little Sassy.  She was adopted from a shelter in Gainesville at the age of 8, and got to spend her golden years with us.

My husband Damion is a PhD student in conservation biology.  His field of study is avian ecology, and he does his research studying wading birds at Lake Okeechoobee.  We got engaged on the 4th of July under the fireworks, and got married in Chile in November.  Our wedding was featured on the Style Network's show Married Away!
